Green buildings in Egypt: program I

several meetings have been held with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture with the idea of creating demonstration adjacent green buildings in Egypt to the Al Azar Park in Cairo. The site is considered very appropriate for visitors center and information on green buildings in Egypt.

 
The EEAA was advised in creating a capacity for green buildings in Egypt in view of the planned construction of a new Ministry building related to environmental impact assessment tasks.

 
The first round of activities to develop this capacity were inaugurated by Minister for Environmental Affairs H.E. Maged Georges on October 23, followed by a seminar and course on Green buildings in Egypt from October 26 to 30 in Cairo, organized by EEAA, German GTZ and Inwent.
 
Renewable energy and energy efficiency projects are, under conditions of additionally, eligible for the clean development mechanism in Egypt (CDM). Egypt as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as non-Annex a country, has signed the Kyoto Protocol on CDM and has established its Designated National Authority (DNA). All the conditions are given that Egypt creates projects to generate Certified Emission Reductions (CER), which can be traded or sold to Annex 1 country entities. In October 2008, Egypt had 52 projects approved or accepted, of which eight were Renewable energy and four were energy efficiency projects.

 
In addition to the usual project clean development mechanism in Egypt (CDM), now the program oriented approach (PoA) enables sector wide clean development mechanisms (CDM), which are more appropriate for creating CER from energy efficiency.
