Renewable energy and energy efficiency projects are, under conditions of additionally, eligible for the clean development mechanism in Egypt (CDM). Egypt as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as non-Annex a country, has signed the Kyoto Protocol on CDM and has established its Designated National Authority (DNA). All the conditions are given that Egypt creates projects to generate Certified Emission Reductions (CER), which can be traded or sold to Annex 1 country entities. In October 2008, Egypt had 52 projects approved or accepted, of which eight were Renewable energy and four were energy efficiency projects.
In addition to the usual project clean development mechanism in Egypt (CDM), now the program oriented approach (PoA) enables sector wide clean development mechanisms (CDM), which are more appropriate for creating CER from energy efficiency.
